An original mock character design based on The Batman Animated TV show. Main inspiration was Bruce Timm

In the beginning stages of this character design, I start by studying The Batman Animated series art style, specifically the art of director and creator Bruce Timm. Watching documentaries, behind the scenes, and studying the show design I was able to get a sense of the pattern and similarities in each design. Silhouette, S and C curves, and extremely simplified designs were some of the consistencies throughout the show.

A noted characteristic of character design in “The Batman” series is a distinct silhouette. A character's silhouette is helped when it is distinguishable from other characters in the lineup. In the beginning stages of this character design, I begin by studying The Batman Animated series art style, specifically the art of director and creator Bruce Timm. Watching documentaries, behind the scenes, and studying the show I was able to get a sense of the pattern and similarities in each design. Silhouette, S and C curves, and extremely simplified designs were some of the consistencies throughout the show. Below is a lineup of a few Batman characters (*Warner Bros) with my design at the end.

Due to the traditional style of animation, a specific and limited color palette works best with the character designs of the show. Most of the show was painted on black backgrounds presenting the visuals with a dark undertone. It then becomes necessary for the designer to decide how prominently their character's colors will show up. I went for a gentle purple/pink and green.
